classic french toast - Chef Nylah

If i had to choose between French toast, Pancakes and waffles. I would pick buttermilk pancakes any day! They reign supreme. Let’s just agree that when it comes to those three, Pancakes would be crowned Queen.

Ideal weekend meal most especially when you are trying to get the kids to participate.

This isn’t about Pancakes. This is about good ol’ french toast. I have tried making them with different kinds of breads but the one that has won my heart till this day would be the fruit bread made a couple of days in advance and left in the fridge so that it slowly ages. In making french toast, the secret is not to use fresh bread. Instead using day old bread is ideal .

Then the custard mix. Since it has fruits, why not kick it up by adding a shot of brandy? Quite optional if you are not a fan of alcohol.

The Recipe is quite simple. Here’s what you would need –

1 cup of milk

2 eggs

1 tablespoon sugar

1 teaspoon vanilla flavour

1 teaspoon orange flavour

1 teaspoon brandy (your preferred choice)

Bread – fruit bread or any bread that’s not fresh.

In a mixing bowl, combine all the ingredients except for the bread.

Cut the bread into 1 inch slices ( i don’t like thicker slices)

Add about a tablespoon of butter to a non stick pan

Place a slice of the bread into the liquid mix , flip both sides

Place in the pan. Reduce heat to about medium low and check till it’s golden brown before flipping to the other side.

Serve with your favorite toppings. You can sprinkle a bit of icing sugar on top and drizzle maple or pancake syrup.
